Those of you who have seen Guy Ritchie’s 2009, Robert Downey Jnr. & Jude Law starring Sherlock Holmes should be able to guess where the ‘Sherlock Dooby Doo’ thing comes from. If not if you’ve ever heard me talk about it you’ll know why I call it that. The “Old man Jenkins!” plot where the world is supposed to crumble at the feet of Mark Strong & Co, almost exclusively because they think he’s a ghost haunting the old abandoned, old abandoned gold mine risen from the dead and un-killable, was not the best. That said there was a lot to like about the film. Downey Jnr. is always great to watch and the relationship between his Holmes and Jude Law’s Watson is excellent. Holmes vision or Holmes brain was kind of cool too; although that wretched scene where Holmes dons a disguise as he follows Irene Adler (Rachael McAdams) around what feels like half of London was not one of Ritchie’s finer moments!)

Anyway as with all modern sequels the hope is more that the mistakes of film one have been rectified and a better follow up is on the way (as opposed to not too much lazy milking of whatever worked the first time); and with Moriarty (Jared Harris as seen in the Downey Jnr. Poster) front and centre we have every reason to expect more from this movie. Of course this time there’s also the much lauded BBC serial Sherlock to live up to, and that is not going to be easy!
As well as the returning Downey Jnr. as Holmes and Law as Watson, this film features Jared Harris (Mad Men, Curious Case of Benjamin Button) as the infamous Professor Moriarty; Stephen Fry (V for Vendetta, Alice In Wonderland) as Mycroft Holmes; and Noomi Rapace (Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Swedish), Prometheus) as Sim.
