There’s about a week and a half until this film comes out in North America and shortly after that the rest of world. But I’m still having trouble working out how this film will do.
The pedigree behind it is first class. Directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man 1 & 2, Zathura, Elf); Based on a well respected Graphic Novel (although the full source details are very much open to debate as the Graphic Novel itself was based on unused film projects from the 90s); Screenplay writers include Bob Orci, Alex Kurtzman & Damon Lindelof who between them have brought us Lost, Fringe, Star Trek (2009) ,Transformers, MI3 & Alias. There are stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Sam Rockwell and even the producers & Exec Producers have pedigree i Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg.
What concerns me is simply that it may be the type of film that no matter the talent simply has too big a job on its hands getting your average 21st Century punter to go and watch it at the cinema. Westerns are still are hard sell and the genre mash up (Western & Sci-Fi certainly sells lots of books and comic books, but can it really grab people watching a real life movie? The obvious comparison here will be Wild, Wild West; but I’m not sure the two compare. The tone of this film is completely different and it doesn’t have the burden of trying to be a faux successor to Men In Black hanging over it like the Sword of Damocles.
