(Charts after all  he words)
It has been another great weekend for Hollywood. Marvel Studios and Paramount’s Captain America successfully kicked of the last part of Marvel Studios’ risky and ambitious Road to the Avengers. Opening at number one  with what is likely to be the biggest Super hero opening of the year in North America ($65.8m edging  out Thor’s $65.7)  Paramount’s Vice Chairman Rob Moore had this to sy about Marvel Studios’ 2011 Super  heroes:-
“When you look at these two properties [Captain America and Thor], you’ve now got a lot of momentum going into next summer’s Avengers,”

The film attracted a younger audience with 43% of its audience 25 or younger as compared to Thor’s 25%. It’s also been given a slightly better reception, getting a Cinemascore of A- to Thor’s B+; but surely that was to be expected. With the audience being relatively young, Marvel & Paramount will be hoping that older viewers will come to the film more over the coming weeks giving it plenty of legs. The 3D take was appoximatly 40% compared to Thor’s 60%.

What was also pleasing was the film’s $2.8m opening in Italy. With the overtly American nature of the hero there have been strong fears that the film wouldn’t play well internationally, but that opening is ahead of Iron Man’s and only a little behind Thor (which had much greater appeal to the international markets.)
Speaking of international markets, Transformers: Dark of The Moon smashed the Chinese opening record by taking $40m during its 4 day opening. (more here) That film now has a global total of $882.4m.

Coming in second with a 72% drop is HP7.2. Harry Potter films always have heavy drops in the second, North American, weekends’ but this one looks worse than it is because of the massive open week. (A record $168.5m) Harry also dropped a lot in its second international weekend, but again from such a height that its second weekend is as much as many films would be happy to get altogether! Down about 61% to $121.3m the film now has an international cume of $560.4m! Add in the N.A box office an the film has already amassed $834.6b. As with Transformers 3 Harry P{otter’s Chinese launch is later so any delusions about this film not joining the $1b club must surely be laid to rest now.

Coming in at number 3 in N.A was Friends With Benefits, starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis. Despite being the second film of the year on this exact theme (No Strings attached was first & opened with $19.7m) the film has managed to open strongly against the might of Captain America and the final Potter movie with $18.5m.

So that’s a mighty impressive summer so far for Hollywood (financially at least). But a very distinct trend has come into much sharper focus this season. Big movies have been earning more money overseas for a while now; but Thor’s much larger foreign gross was a little surprising, especially given that super hero movies have tended to do better in North America than internationally. (At least until the sequels come out) The vast difference in international coin for Transformers 3 and Pirates 4 is extraordinary as well. The first two Transformers films did make more abroad than in North America, but were talking relatively low ratios.; 55% for the first film ad 52% for the second. TF3 has already earned 63% of its box office from the international markets; with Japan yet to open and China having just opened the film will likely end up with over 70% from abroad. (At least 2/3 foreign for sure.) The real shocker though would be Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides; many Americans could be forgiven for the thinking the film had been a box office disappointment. The $238m it has earned there, whilst by no means a small gross, is a fair way behind the $305m and $309m of the first and third movies; it is even further behind the series leader, Dead Man’s Chest. ($423.3m). But despite the relatively low domestic gross Pirates 4 has managed to climb to 6th on the global all time highest grosser list; and only the 8thmovie to make over $1b. That domestic to international split currently stands at 77% int.

Whilst Green Lantern, Mr Popper’s Penguins and Zookeeper are unlikely to find saving grace from their international runs, X-Men: First Class, Kung Fu Panda 2 (and of course Pirates 4) have made up for puzzlingly disappointing domestic earnings, with great showings in the international market.
