Typical, you wait years for an Aardman movie and two come along at once! Having gotten us all excited for Arthur Christmas just a couple of days ago, now we get our first look at The Pirates! Band of Misfits. This one see the return of glorious stop motion as Peter Lord makes his first directorial effort since he shared the role with Nick Park, on Chicken Run, way back in 2000.
Hugh Grant is The Pirate Captain!

There’s a typically impressive cast of comedic, British talent, behind the voices:-
Hugh Grant (Bridgette Jone’s Diary) , David Tennant (Dr. Who, Fright Night (2011), Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter 5, 6 & 7), Martin Freeman (The Office UK, The Hobbit, Sherlock), as well as Jeremy Piven & Salma Hayek.

Here’s the studio tale...

In The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Hugh Grant stars in his first animated role as the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain - a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It's a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Along the way they battle a diabolical queen (Imelda Staunton) and team up with a haplessly smitten young scientist (David Tennant), but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure!

I’m looking forward to seeing this kind of film in 3D and it will be the second film released under the fledgling Aardman & Sony Pictures Animation deal.

(Apologies; first time up I put Hugh Laurie, not Hugh Grant!)
