Batman: Year One trailer is pretty fantastic.

Frank Miller’s Batman Year one is one of those stories that just remains timeless. It’s near perfect and you can see bits of it in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, in Mask of The Phantasm and of course you can read it. It still reads fresh, as if it was written last month and this latest DC Animated movie really carries through the look of the original comics.

As always it never seems quite right to me when I see an animated Batman and don’t hear Kevin Conroy’s voice, but that’s my baggage; the voice work here seems perfectly matched to the visuals. Bat is voiced by The OC’s Ben McKenzie whilst geek cool is added by the voices of Eliza Dushku (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse) as Selina Kyle / Catwoman and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) as Detective Sarah Essen. Bryan Cranson (Malcom in the Middle, Breaking Bad) plays the key role of Lieutenant James Gordon. The major roles are rounded out by Grey Delisle (who appears to have voiced every female cartoon or video game character for the past 20 years, including Azula in Avatar: The Last Airbender) as Barbara Gordon, and Alex Rocco (Smokin Aces) as Carmine Falcone.

The DC and Marvel straight to DVD animated movies have generally been pretty good. Whilst there have been the occasional clunkers like DC’s Superman / Batman Apocalypse and Marvel’s Thor: Tales of Asgard, there have been some true gems, DC’s Justice League: A New Frontier & Batman: Under The Red Hood as well as Marvel’s Planet Hulk & Ultimate Avengers. The source story is of course abbot as good as it gets so you have to hope that this will come in at the top end of this healthy market. In fact the biggest problem this may have is the same ‘problem’ the best of these films all share. They’re too damn short. I know it’s an expensive business but an extra fifteen minutes or so to allow for even better story telling can’t be too much to ask can it?
