  3. So Everton, is it going to be a small registry office ceremony for you and Cameron or are you two going for the big church wedding? I suspect you'd already decided you were going to love this movie before you'd even seen it.

  4. You can't decide to like something before you see it. At least I can't. You can have expectations, given that James Cameron is one of the finest writer/directors around and that I love Sci-Fi AND that as a cinema lover I was looking forward to seeing the advances in film tech showcased here the balance of probabilities was that I'd at least like the film. The odds were high that I'd find it technically brilliant if not intellectually so, or emotionally so. If you liked Batman begins you are naturally going to go to The Dark Knight with high expectations of liking the film. If you liked Memento and Batman Begins (and Insomnia) then you are going to watch The Prestige with a feeling that you will b entertained and are likely to like / love the film.

By the same token having loved The Matrix you expect to like the sequels. Doubly so if you liked Bound; however here your hopes are crushed and so bad is the 2nd Matrix film you don't even bother to go and see the 3rd one. To use another example. Robert Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol. Here is a source book that is well loved and one of my favourite reads of all time. I've watched countless filmed versions of the story and think how can a Zemeckis version of this great story, with 21st century 3D and all the tricks that Motion capture can perform, be anything but excellent. Well it was garbage; pretty to look at, interesting to see the various changes that were made to the actors with the animated Mo-cap, but totally devoid of any heart or soul. I never saw that coming, and neither did anyone else I know who had seen it. Sure as a first film for 12 years and a promised quantum shift in effects and 3D tech, ironically thrown into stark contrast when you see the Mo Capped Carol and compare not just the animation but the details missed in the performance of the actors as compared to the depth of expression of the Avatar actors.

I don't go to any movie with my mind made up, to do so would be foolish in the extreme I do however, as with all things in life, have an expectation based on past experiences, word of mouth and a gut feeling. Sometimes it pays off, as with Avatar The Matrix, Infernal affairs, Crouching Tiger, X2, Coraline, Wallace & Gromitt, The nightmare before Christmas, Muppet Christmas Carol, Snatch, Spirited away, Leon, and Lord of the Rings and so on. Sadly other times you get Batman forever , Batman & Robin, Ghost Rider, Knowing, Star Wars Episode 2 (so, so bad) Matrix 2 & 3, Hulk (beautifully made but not the best story),9 (ditto), Kill Bill pt1, Steam boy and so on.

Decide on feelings about a movie before seeing it? Impossible; have expectations and hopes? Of course. Asides from going to a movie you know will be rubbish so you can laugh about it, who on Earth pays to go and watch a film they don’t think they'll like? I'm excluding partners and parents from the list.

Anyway Mr. or Mrs (miss, Ms, Lady?) anonymous we'd love to know what you thought of the movie, and may a little bit of why, and who you are would be nice too.
