OK that was a big title but a lot happened this weekend. The biggest news has to be Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Pt 2 becoming the 9th film in history to cross the $1b dollar mark. With a North American total of $318.5 and an international gross of $690m the film now has $1,008.5m, and is the 8th highest grossing film of all time. It’s an impressive feat, equal quickest to reach the mark with James Cameron’s Avatar. I’m sure you’ll read a lot about 3D ticket prices and inflation etc (Yes the first Harry Potter film is still by far the biggest ticket seller) but we’re an awful lot of inflation away from the days where we can say reaching $1b is not a massive achievement. Included in that total are $88.5m from the UK and $66.7m from Japan. I was let down by the film (I think the film series is very much hit & miss) and I think Pirates 4 is terrible but their earnings are beyond outstanding and congratulations to all involved.

Hot on the heels of Harry Potter is Transformers: Dark of The Moon. Finally opening in Japan with $9.5m (A staggering 82% of which was from 3D) the film now has a $982.9m and will join HP7.2 as the 10th film to cross the $1b mark in a few days. The standout performance for this film has to be the $113.7m that it has made in just 10 days in China. That makes the film second only to Avatar for US releases in China.

The number 2 film for the weekend (Worldwide) was Captain America.  Taking an estimated $73.4m ($48.5 international, $24.9 North America) The Captain was a mixed bag doing both better and worse than expected. As expected it took a hit from the opening of Cowboys & Aliens in North America (a very similar audience) and The Smurfs in N. A, but it lost more of audience than hoped and has once again fallen behind Thor’s pace from the beginning of Summer. ($116.7m in 10 days to Thor’s $119.5) It’s still a good performance, just with Captain America being more recognisable and so American, many (myself included) though it might do better than Thor in that market. Against the summer’s non Marvel Studios super heroes The Captain is performing far better. It has already out-grossed the far more expensive Green Lantern and is $18m ahead of X-Men: First Class at the same point. Overseas Captain America is doing well, if not as well as Thor, which is no surprise. That said the $8.5 in Mexico & $6.8 in Brazil are the biggest openings so far for Marvel studios in those markets. All told the final origin tale is doing pretty well and both The Avengers and the now unrestricted (by introducing characters the general public were mostly unfamiliar with either at all or in detail) sequels should be free to substantially increase their takings (Sufficient Quality assumed of course)

In North America many people seem to have been shocked by the dead heat (in estimates) between Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs; not by the fact that both films ended up with the exact same estimated takings, but by the success of The Smurfs> I’m not sure why that should be, children’s films, even ones considered poor by critics, are big business. If they weren’t why would Sony spend over $100m making the film in the first place? The Smurfs is a film that has genuine nostalgia for the parents (as opposed to something like Marmaduke) as well as the cute little creatures that tend to be the most successful in this genre; see Alvin and Chipmunks, heading into its third (yikes) film this Christmas. One of the key selling points for Sony when choosing to make the Smurfs would be the fact that as ‘foreign’ creations the international prospects are potentially even better than the domestic ones. This appears to be proving true as the movie took $3.96m in Spain.

Cowboys & Aliens didn’t open anywhere other than North America, but given the huge amount of talent behind the film, Director Favreau, Producers Ron Howard & Brian Grazer, Exec Producer Spielberg, Writers, Kurtzman, Orci & Lindelof and stars Craig &  Ford, then its $36.2m opening would have to be seen as disappointing, even with such a polarizing title and concept. Its hopes now rest on an atypical run of low weekly declines over a long period of time (like Batman Begins) and / or much stronger run internationally than domestically. However, even though 2011 is full of films that performed much more strongly away from ‘home’ (Thor, Pirates 4, X-Men even HP7 and TF3) but Westerns are not the best travellers, especially in modern times? Still if anyone can pull in an international audience it’s Ford & Craig in the right film and the Spielberg name.
