Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, 2012, The Patriot) makes a clean break from over the disaster movies and goes straight into another period piece. (His only other Hollywood movie not to be a big Sci-Fi / disaster movie is the American war of Independence set ‘The Patriot’.) Written by John Orloff (Band of Brothers, 2 eps), A Mighty Heart); the film is decidedly less flash than we expect from Emmerich, but maybe a lot more plot instead? There’s still plenty of effects work going on to bring Shakespeearian London to life and hints of more than a little action too.
Synopsis...
“Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.”
The cast is promising too:- Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Xavier Samuel, Sebastian Armesto, Rafe Spall, Edward Hogg, Jamie Campbell Bower and Derek Jacobi
The film arrives at the end of October (28th).
