Super 8 promo reel reveals much. Spoilers!

Paramount has released a full clip, of an in film video that the movie’s characters see bits and pieces of during the film.

It’s an interesting move, given that the film has spent the best part of year deliberately not telling us what was really going on, other than the film was made in the style of a late 70s, early 80 Steven Spielberg film, with some sort of escaped monster / alien / failed military experiment on the loose in small town America. That approach has worked with the movie buffs, but it appears Paramount are afraid that it may not have been so successful with mainstream, American audiences. Whilst the films people wanted to see, Pirates 4, Fast 5, Thor, Bridesmaids and The Hangover Pt II have performed well, audiences have not been rushing to see films that they know less about or don’t feel compelled to see, even if the films are well reviewed. With Abrams only two films both carrying heavyweight potential regardless of the director (Mission Impossible 3 & Star Trek) it may also be that Abrams is not yet enough of a movie directing ‘name’ to make a massive opening for an unknown movie. That said the film cost a relatively cheap $50m to produce.

Unfortunately the film’s throwback to earlier times is reflected in what is now an atypically truncated international release schedule stretching through June, July and August.

Here ya go...
