In an interview with September’s issue of Empire magazine, David Fincher discusses the harshness of the novel and again reiterates the willingness, the desire even, of the studio (Sony) to make the film no holds barred. Hence the quote ‘“I’ve been working 20 years to have somebody say , ‘ We want as hard an R as you can make it’”’ . Added to Daniel Craig’s statement that film isn’t being made with restrictions, it is good news for anybody who somehow thought David Fincher would be interested in making a watered down version of the Swedish novel.
(Also kudos to Empire for not joining several other, ‘lazy’, media and calling the film a remake.

To quote Empire it is “...the US take on Stieg Larson’s astonishingly successful, surprisingly brutal book...” Or to quote Fincher himself... " There is absolutely no reason to do this. Steve Zaillian has written the new screenplay, and he has been based on the book and made their own version. Sure, there are scenes that will resemble them in the Swedish film, but it is the book that we are filming...”
Fincher also compares the book – film to both The Exorcist and Silence of The Lambs. He feels that they are the only other examples of source material that is at once massively popular, and potentially very, very off putting and even repulsive to many. Having to courage to make a film that fully embraces that, as you have to if you’re going to bother at all, is no small matter. But Fincher makes the point that this is nly half the battle; the rest being ‘”...to find a place where you can be really hard-hitting – like the material it’s based on – and yet we also want to make it a moviegoing experience.”’
