After a month of reporting Harry Potter records the Smurfs finally give the international and global charts a new number one. Not that HP7.2 will be too concerned; with another $30m International weekend ($36.8m global)it  pushed past $1.2b and further ahead of Transformers: Dark of the Moon as the year’s biggest film, and 3rd biggest of all time (unadjusted of course). For those keeping score it is also inching closer to the adjusted gross of the best attended Harry Potter film; which remains the first one, Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone (Sorcerer’s Stone in North America.).

*North America includes The US & Canada. **Fast 5 opened 1 week before the official summer movie season, but to all intents & purposes it’s a ‘Summer Movie’. Besides 11 Years ago Summer season didn’t kick off until US Memorial day at the end of May, maybe another change is coming.

The Smurfs continued to show that it was a wise project for Sony to invest in. With Smurfs having remained a popular brand in their home country, other parts of Europe, ad indeed he world, it was always a project that was likely to prove a commercial success regardless of its North American performance. It also helps that the film is in 3D which continues to thrive in just abbot every country except the Unite d States. (It was noted this week that Canada is almost as happy with 3d (poor conversions are of course disliked everywhere)  as the rest of world, with films that open with 45% or 50% 3D sales in The U.S still opening to 60% in Canada. Once again the growing importance of China to Hollywood films was demonstrated with a $12.5 million five day opening for The Smurfs. Another five say launch, this time in The U.K & Ireland made $6.57m  (despite the trouble with riots slowing down the film biz in England); There was also $4.48 million from Russia, another market that continues to grow in importance. The Smurfs is already one of the most successful ‘talking little things’ movies of recent years as the chart below shows...

Rise of the Planet of the Apes, grossed $40.5m Int. ($68m global) to remain the number 2 film. This was in large part thanks to very big openings in the U.K ($9.65m) and France ($8.7)  with many major markets yet to open Rise of the Apes is on course for a successful run and a continuation of the long running series. (Of course it remains unlikely to reach the heights of Tim Burton’s, Fox exec ruined, 2001 remake, Planet of The Apes.

Other news of note is Green Lantern’s return to the international charts. The film hasn’t had the best run but maybe it’s severely disjointed release pattern will help the film in the long run. With the stench of the bad buzz surrounding the run up to its North American release perhaps dying down a little, and three well received Super hero films (Thor - $267,166,560; X-Men: First Class - $206,500,000; Captain America - $128,300,000 & counting)paving the way maybe Green Lantern can salvage some respectability and, more importantly, set up some good will for the still possible sequel.  It took $ 14.2m  this weekend thanks to strong openings in Australia ($3.1 m) and  Mexico ($4.3m)
