Our first chance to see if Mr Lautner can leverage his shirtless Twilight Sage fame into an A-List career comes with John Singleton’s (Boyz N The hood, Shaft (2000), 2 Fast, 2 Furious) Abduction. Starring Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Alfred Molina, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello, Sigourney Weaver, Denzel Whitaker and Michael Nyqvist.
Here’s Lionsgate’s word...
“Taylor Lautner stars as a young man unwittingly thrust into a deadly world of covert espionage in Lionsgates's action thriller, ABDUCTION, directed by John Singleton.
For as long as he can remember, Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner) had had the uneasy feeling that he's living someone else's life. When stumbles upon the image of himself as a little boy on a missing persons website, all of Nathan's darkest fears come true; as he realises his parents are not his own and his life is a lie, carefully fabricated to hide something more mysterious and dangerous than he could have ever imagined
Just as he begins to piece together his true identity, Nathan is targeted by a team of trained killers, forcing him on the run with the only person he can trust , his neighbour, Karen (Lilly Collins). Every second counts as Nathan ad Karen race to evade an army of assassins and federal operatives. But as his opponents close in, Nathan realises that the only way he'll survive - and solve the mystery of his elusive biological father - is to stop running and take matter into his own hands.”
Now I’m sure there will be a number of people rooting for this to fail simply because it stars Lautner. That’s their baggage and they should ask themselves if they would be lining up to see this film if it starred anyone else?
John Singleton is a director who remains, in general, a disappointment to many. After the master class that was Boyz N The Hood great things were expected. Great things never really materialised, but he’s certainly a competent director and there’s no reason to think he can’t continue to turn out decent action films. Note to Marvel Studios, please do not choose Mr Singleton to direct The Black Panther. It would fit in with your directing choices and you have certainly given many directors a chance to prove they can step up to the big films. All have succeeded so far, but as there will doubtless be a call to have the film directed by a black director (I don’t care I just want a good one) please choose someone else. I really don’t think Singleton will ever be much more than competent again. Then again, maybe I’m being too harsh?
Either way Abduction is out on the 23rd of September...
