I'm steering clear of the politics of this thing, as much as
possible, and dealing with the film side of things. It does need to be pointed out that this is not a subject that will be seen the same way by all people everywhere, it just isn't. Anybody who thinks
that this is a simple, black & White “good guys versus terrorist” thing
needs to remember / brush up on the whole Britain & the IRA situation,
(with special reference to S.A.S killing of IRA members in Gibraltar). Enough
of that, and on to the film itself. Oscar winning director Katherine Bigelow
was working on a film about the hunt of Bin Laden for a long time; then life intervened
as he was not only found, but killed. So the film evolved into this one.
Synopsis…
“For a decade, an elite team of intelligence and military
operatives, working in secret across the globe, devoted themselves to a single
goal: to find and eliminate Osama bin Laden. Zero Dark Thirty reunites the
Oscar(R) winning team of director-producer Kathryn Bigelow and writer-producer
Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) for the story of history's greatest manhunt for the
world's most dangerous man.”
The film has a strong, but not “starry” cast Jessica
Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Mark Strong, Jennifer Ehle, Kyle
Chandler and Edgar Ramirez. (Aren’t Jessica Chastain and Mark Strong in at
least 10 films a year each? How do they do that?!) Bigelow has been putting out
some entertaining films for what seems like forever (Near Dark, Point Break, Strange
Days, K19) but it was good to her get some critical, if still not commercial,
success with the Hurt Locker’s awards. It still seems beyond belief that she
was the first woman to win an Oscar for best director, yet it is as true today
as it was a few years ago. So are we looking at a film hoping to join Argo,
Lincoln &Co in the Oscar race or ‘just’ a good old thriller? I guess we
shall find out from the 19th of December. (Release dates below)
