Will Smith’s involvement is certainly hoped for, but he won’t
commit to the film until he is happy with the script. According to Deadline, Warner Brothers have
sealed the deal with producers Akiva Goldsman and Overbrook entertainment to
bring another instalment from the world of Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend to
the big screen. For several years the rumours have been that a prequel would be
made, but that hasn’t been stated here. It may seem obvious that the film has
to be a prequel, given that Smith’s character seemed pretty dead after the
first film; and that Smith & director, Francis Lawrence, both spoke of a
prequel a few years back; but no story teller has ever let a death prevent a
character’s return. Think Ian Malcolm fro Jurassic Park, Sherlock Holmes, or pretty
much every super hero ever created. I am Legend came out in 22007 and made a
considerable $585m worldwide.
