Robocop remake adds Samuel L Jackson to an increasingly impressive cast...

As if Gary Oldman’s presence wasn’t enough, the coolest mother-f***** on the planet has signed on to Jose Padilha’s (Elite Squad) ambitious update of the classic, influential, Robocop. According to the Hollywood Reporter, MR. Jackson will play a character called “...Pat Novak, a charismatic TV mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world.”

The titular role is being played by Joel Kinnaman who stars in the American version of TV show ‘The Killing’; as well as having  small, but memorable, role in this year’s ‘Safe House’. Gary Oldman may or may not “Fucking Love this guy” as the key creator of Robocop.

Presently the film is aiming for an unspecified date in summer 2013. Much like director Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers, Robocop is a heavily satirical and deceptively deep film that has an awful lot to say about the cash driven society of the 1980’s, not to mention the power and influence of ‘dumb TV’. It’s the carrying forward of the subtext, not the updating of the FX, that is the key to making this work and casting like this suggest, that maybe these film-makers get that.

"I bet you think you're pretty smart huh?"
