This is an interesting one. Making a spin-off from a very
popular film series, but using the name of that series titular character, even
though said character isn’t in the film? More than that, having decided to make
a film with another character the opportunity to go another way; to cast
someone like Idris Elba a female lead etc; but instead to cast someone who is
in many ways very similar to Damon.
It can’t be argued that Renner isn’t a great watch though.
He’s been excellent in his recent roles from ‘The Hurt Locker’, to ‘The Town’,
to the still playing ‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’. With is exposure
about to (or perhaps already) jump even higher with his co-starring role as
Hawkeye in The Avengers, Renner could well have the juice to open this,
alongside the title of course, and certainly has the potential to match Damon’s
level of performance. Damon’s level of performance. It is always good to see
Edward Norton as well. (Ironically many, many Marvel fans wish they would be
seeing Renner & Norton together on-screen in The Avengers as well as this
film. Norton was infamously unable to work out issues between himself and
Marvel Studios to continue playing Bruce Banner / The Incredible Hulk.)
Synopsis...
“The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series,
Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage
franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The
Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by
Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy
Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the
first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers
Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise
veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise
their roles.”
The film is written & Directed by Tony Gilroy (Dan
Gilroy co-wrote) who did such a magnificent job scripting the Matt Damon Bourne
Trilogy, as well as writing & directing the sadly ‘under seen’ Michael
Clayton.
Given the very high “intelligent blockbuster” standard of the first three films, I am hoping that this one lives up to their standard. As such it is god to see many of the characters from that movieverse returning. Of course the thing is, aren’t we always going to be stuck with the knowledge that, at best, Renner’s character was the 2nd best zombie-super assassin?
