...Or at least a film that isn’t one of the 10 worst films
of whatever year it comes out. The sense of anticipation that a great, new,
directing talent had appeared, after Shyamalan’s 3rd & 4th
films (‘The 6th Sense’ & ‘Unbreakable’) proved so assured,
quickly dissipated. The main debate that seems to rage around him now is at
what point it all started to fall apart. There are those (myself included) that
believe it all started to go downhill after Unbreakable (even if there were
good things in Signs and The Village) and there are those that give ‘Signs’ a
little more love and believe it all started to slide with The Village.

Now M Knight is cleverly finding ways to make sure people go
to see his films, even if just on opening weekends, no matter what. By
directing the, live action, film of the immensely popular, and extremely well written
TV show, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, Shyamalan guaranteed a massive audience
of fans and parents of younger fans. There was also the hope that he could
restore his undoubted talents behind the camera and let the story tell itself.
However his ego refused to let him just adapt the material or even get someone
else to do so; nooo he had to change it, make it “better”. The result was an
abomination, an insult to the source material and one of the worst films I have
ever seen. It was so bad it was made the
butt of ‘I want my money back’ jokes at the BAFTAs last year.

So having killed off that series (for now, this is one case where
a reboot would actually be welcome) we now have a film starring not only Will
Smith, but Jaden Smith too. If ever there seemed like a sure bet to get people
rushing to the cinema, it’s the reuniting of the father son pairing from ‘The
Pursuit of Happyness’. Can Shyamalan get
himself back to the very high standards of 6th Sense & Unbreakable?
Can he at least have us not wanting to scoop our brains out with an acid soaked
Ice scraper? Does the appeal of the Smiths outweigh the decision many made to give
up hoping he’ll make good films again.
After Earth is about the attempts of a father and son to
survive after they crash land on a hostile planet, 1,000 years in our future.
