I was looking forward to this film for the longest time for
any number of reasons. Being a big fan of Tom Hardy’s is one of the uppermost
and I imagine the film will pick up at least a few extra ticket sales from
people eager to see what a pumped up Hardy looks like ahead of his ‘controversial’
(but then what isn’t in comic book adaptations?) appearance as the muscle-bound,
tactical genius, Bane in next year’s The Dark Knight Rises.
You’re not going to get over 9 minutes of chat and clips
without a little bit of spoilerisation (it’s a word), but it isn’t too bad if
you already know what the film is about; Although if you want to work out the
Moby Dick allegory for yourself avoid at all costs.
“Rising stars Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton command the screen
as two estranged brothers facing the fight of a lifetime in Lionsgate's
WARRIOR, a moving, inspirational action drama from acclaimed director Gavin
O'Connor (MIRACLE). Haunted by a tragic past, ex-Marine Tommy Conlon (Hardy)
returns home for the first time in fourteen years to enlist the help of his
father (Nick Nolte) to train for SPARTA, the biggest winner-takes-all event in
mixed martial arts history. A former wrestling prodigy, Tommy blazes a path
toward the championship while his brother, Brendan (Edgerton), an
ex-fighter-turned teacher, returns to the ring in a desperate bid to save his
family from financial ruin. But when Brendan's unlikely, underdog rise sets him
on a collision course with the unstoppable Tommy, the two brothers must finally
confront each other and the forces that pulled them apart, facing off in the
most soaring, soul stirring, and unforgettable climax that must be seen to be
believed. A rousing ode to redemption, reconciliation and the power of the
human spirit, WARRIOR is also a moving testament to the enduring bonds of
family.”
So a “Chick flick with only one chick in it”, a kick ass
fighting movie, a family drama; take your pick. It has been written and directed
by Gavin O’Connor and stars Joel Edgerton, Tom Hardy, Jennifer Morrison and
Nick Nolte.
