Now I’m not going to say that I predicted the little blue
people would reach these heights; but while many were laughing at the frankly
awful trailers and looking at the film with eyes both too adult and, to be
honest, a little to ‘Domestic’ (Americans I’m talking to you) I always felt the
film was likely to be a success. Much like Tintin the characters have had a
loyal following around the globe for decades. Add to that the fact that there
was a bunch of cute little people running around doing the things that adults
cringe at and kids tend to adore, and there was always a recipe for some
measure of success.

It’s all too easy to forget that many of us would have been
watching the cartoon, engulfed by its magic, whilst our parents sat in the
corner , reading the paper, wondering if the torture would ever end. I might
add that the film, like many this year, is nowhere near as bad as the reviews
would have you believe. I’ve been to many a film with kids where I thought some
form of drawn out, and painful suicide may have been preferable to getting through to the end of the
‘movie’. The Smurfs didn’t do that to me. More to the point, I’m honest enough
to admit that if i was 4 – 12, I’d have been begging my parents to take me to
see the Smurfs.
Maybe the sequel will be better. There are ways to make a
really good Smurf movie, set it n their fantasy land for; but at least we won’t
have to put up with the awful squeaky voiced songs of The Chipmunks when our
kids, nephews or nieces take us to see the Smurfs 2.
Congratulations....
