After a flurry of Rumours yesterday that Gerard Butler would
be reprising his iconic turn as King Leonidas in the prequel to 300; Producer Bernie
Goldmann (300, Land of The Dead) confirmed that there would be small roles for
both Butler and Headley in the film.
Speaking to Fandango, he also said that the rest of the cast
was likely to be unknow
ns, because he feels that putting actors you know in “historical”
films is a bad idea. Why? Because apparently you see the actor not the
character:-
"When you make a period movie like that, it's great not
to know the actors...You can't see Tom Cruise in a historical movie. You go,
'That's Tom Cruise!'"
Now I’ve heard this before and I’ve always thought it was
pretty asinine to be honest. To hear it from a person who actually makes films
is a little disconcerting. Not that I don’t believe some people genuinely have
trouble separating actors / stars from characters in certain circumstances;
just that I think casting several characters based on this premise is going a
little too far. Not to mention the fact that Pirates of The Caribbean (to name
but 4) has had little trouble with this issue at all.
