Fans of the 2010 indie film and Mark Millar’s / Ken Romita Junior’s comic books rejoice. Kick-Ass 2 is now only a matter of months away and all indications are that Matthew Vaughan’s handpicked replacement, director Jeff Wadlow, is doing a good job.
This film is based on both the Kick-Ass 2comic and its
prequel Hit-Girl. (Both of them are worthy follow ups to Kick-Ass), although I
again wonder if the film will take a slightly happier / dare I say tamer,
approach than the comics. That’s not a problem, Kick-Ass worked wonderfully well
as a comic, but the film’s happier slant suited that medium better. The same is
likely to be the case here.
Synopsis...
“Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to
2010's irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass' (Aaron
Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked
crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero
joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red
Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the
blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.”
Those who have both seen Kick-Ass and read the original
comic, will be wondering how the film will move forward given the differences
between the two. Regardless the film is hoping to pull off an Austin Powers / Terminator
style jump in box office from the first film to the second. Whilst such an increase may be unlikely, I’ll
be very surprised if this film doesn't double the $97m the first film took in
at the box office.
